Bitcoin Surge Pushes Crypto Market Back Above $3 Trillion
The cryptocurrency market has regained its $3 trillion valuation mark for the first time in about eight months, thanks to Bitcoin's recent surge. The largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization jumped nearly 8% on September 21, climbing above $87,300 for the highest level since January. This rally helped push the overall crypto market value past $3 trillion.
The increase in Bitcoin's price also led to a steep rise in derivatives positioning. Open interest in perpetual futures markets has risen to $160 billion, the highest level since late October last year. This rapid growth in open interest and funding rates is causing concern among traders, as it may lead to increased leverage-driven liquidations.
Caleb Lin, chief trader at QCP Group, noted that rising open interest alongside spot demand is generally healthy. However, when derivatives positions grow faster than spot buying demand, the market can become self-reinforcing. Even a modest pullback could trigger long position liquidations, driving prices lower and leading to further deleveraging.
