Bitcoin Surges Above $80,000 as Ethereum Accelerates Toward $2,500
The cryptocurrency market experienced a significant shift in August 2026, breaking out of its previous consolidation and witnessing substantial gains across various assets. Bitcoin led the charge, surging above USD 80,000 after escaping its multi-month consolidation structure. Ethereum also accelerated, rapidly moving toward the USD 2,500 region and reclaiming all three major moving averages.
The strength was not limited to these two assets; XRP recovered sharply from the USD 1 area, Hyperliquid extended its rally into the USD 80 region, and Dogecoin moved away from its yearly lows. Cardano and PEPE also improved, although their technical structures remained less convincing than those of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and HYPE.
Market-wide data supports this change in market structure; Bitcoin gained roughly 25% during August, while Ethereum advanced approximately 32.5%, according to CoinMarketCap. Around 70 of 84 non-stablecoin assets in the current top 100 finished August higher, showing that participation broadened substantially compared with previous months.
Institutional flows also strengthened; US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately USD 3.52 billion in August net inflows, while spot Ethereum ETFs attracted roughly USD 1.85 billion, according to SoSoValue.
