Bitcoin Surges Above $85,000 Amid Regulatory Clarity Hopes
Bitcoin surged above $85,000 on September 21 as its price recovery continued. The move came after U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded a strong late-week inflow, traders covered bearish positions, and U.S. regulators continued work on crypto-market rules.
Naeem Aslam, chief investment officer at Zaye Capital Markets, identified three factors behind the surge: stronger spot ETF inflows, regulatory developments, and traders covering short positions. The data shows that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $433 million in net inflows on September 18, with investors pulling hundreds of millions of dollars from the funds earlier in the week.
The Federal Reserve increased its target range for the federal funds rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 3.75%-4% on September 16, which can have a negative effect on risk-sensitive assets like Bitcoin. However, analysts believe that if broader risk appetite strengthens and U.S. regulatory clarity improves, Bitcoin can benefit from both speculative demand and deeper institutional participation.
Carsten Menke, head of next-generation research at Julius Baer, said regulation does not drive adoption, citing examples of organic adoption such as prediction markets, trading platforms, and stablecoin-linked credit cards. The analysts from Zaye Capital indicate that $85,000 is a key level of resistance for Bitcoin and the potential upside target would be $100,000 if inflows and macroeconomic conditions stay supportive.
