Bitcoin Volatility Remains Tethered Despite Price Surge
Bitcoin's price has appreciated by nearly 30% over the past two months, but its implied volatility remains contained. The Bitcoin Volmex Implied Volatility (BVIV) index is near its all-time low of approximately 38 points.
The BVIV measures expected 30-day forward volatility derived from Bitcoin-linked options. A rising BVIV indicates accelerating price movements in subsequent periods, while a low BVIV suggests muted implied volatility in the underlying asset.
Notably, unlike equity volatility indicators like the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), the BVIV index can rise significantly during both upward and downward price movements. The BVIV serves as an effective metric for evaluating market sentiment surrounding Bitcoin.
The recent 30% cumulative gain in Bitcoin's price has been driven by regulatory developments, including the CLARITY Act introduced in the US Congress. Escalating risks associated with US sovereign debt have also stimulated renewed institutional interest in digital assets.
