Bitcoin Whales Absorb $177M in BTC Amid Exchange Reserve Decline
A significant Bitcoin whale withdrawal from Bitstamp has further accelerated the trend of large holders accumulating BTC while exchange balances decline. The transfer, which equates to approximately $177 million in value, involved a previously unknown wallet withdrawing 2,782 BTC and transferring it to an unidentified address.
This transaction is part of a broader divergence within the Bitcoin market, where large wallets are accumulating tens of thousands of BTC over the past two months, while smaller wallets reduce their positions. Data shows that ownership among the largest addresses remains stable, even as exchange reserves fall toward multi-year lows and available supply decreases.
Furthermore, CryptoQuant data reveals that wallets holding more than 100 BTC have added roughly 54,400 BTC between June 14 and August 14. In contrast, smaller investors sold around 27,400 BTC during the same period. The largest holders, specifically those with addresses holding over 10,000 BTC, recorded net accumulation of 46,420 BTC on a 60-day rolling basis as of August 9.
The concentration of Bitcoin among the largest addresses has also remained remarkably stable in recent weeks. As of August 18, the top 10 holders controlled about 5.88% of supply, while the top 20 accounted for 8.47%. However, exchange reserves are falling toward multi-year lows, with aggregate Bitcoin reserves across exchanges hovering at approximately 2.72 million BTC.
