Bitcoin's Q3 Surge Signals Return to Profit for Spot ETF Investors
Bitcoin closed its second-best third quarter in history, with the asset posting a gain historically matched only once before. The strong quarterly performance comes as investors in U.S. spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) returned to profit for the first time since their launch in January 2024.
The recovery was anchored by Bitcoin's reclaim of the $86,000 price level, which sits near the blended average cost basis for a large share of institutional and retail inflows that entered through the approved funds. When the asset trades below this zone, a significant portion of ETF holders carry unrealized losses. Above it, those same positions move back into the black.
Investors who bought into the spot Bitcoin ETF market near its launch spent eight months in the red as the cryptocurrency traded below their aggregate entry price. The return to profitability after eight months signals that the post-launch correction has been fully absorbed.
