Bitcoin's 'Uptober' Performance a Mixed Bag
The reputation of October as a strong month for Bitcoin, dubbed 'Uptober,' is largely true, with six of the past eight years ending in the black. Since 2018, Bitcoin's monthly candles from Binance show that the strongest gains were in 2021, with a 39.9% increase, followed by 2023 with a 28.5% gain, and 2020 with a 28% gain. In contrast, 2018 and 2025 were the only years to end in the red, with losses of 3.8% and 3.9%, respectively.
Last October's experience serves as a cautionary tale, as a single day can turn the month around, particularly for those trading with leverage. On October 10, 2025, leveraged positions worth over $19 billion were force-closed within 24 hours, resulting in a 3.9% loss for Bitcoin. This highlights the importance of managing risk and avoiding excessive leverage.
Currently, Bitcoin is trading above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, indicating a possible upward trend. However, the price is stuck in a range between $83,500 and $86,600, and a close outside this range will be necessary to determine the direction for the month.
