Bitget Eyes Expansion into Bhutan's Emerging Digital Finance Hub
Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has announced its plans to establish a local subsidiary and office in Bhutan's Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a special administrative region. This move comes after signing a cooperation agreement with the GMC Authority, which aims to explore the establishment of a financial services license administered by the Gelephu Financial Services Office.
The GMC is an international financial and innovation hub under development in southern Bhutan, functioning as a special administrative region with its own financial regulatory system. Bitget plans to collaborate with the GMCA on business operations, regulatory compliance, and building a digital asset ecosystem.
Bhutan has been promoting green cryptocurrency mining as a national strategy, capitalizing on its abundant hydropower resources. The country announced its 'Bitcoin Development Pledge' in December 2025, clearly articulating a long-term policy to responsibly integrate digital assets into its economic development strategy.
Bitget CEO Gracy Chen stated that Bhutan is approaching digital assets with a rare combination of long-term perspective, clean energy advantages, and regulatory clarity. GMC Director Jigdrel Singay emphasized the goal of building a world-class digital asset ecosystem grounded in robust regulation, institutional-grade standards, and long-term economic value.
