BITI's Weekend Problem Exposed
The ProShares Short Bitcoin Strategy ETF (NYSEARCA:BITI) is designed to provide inverse exposure to the price of bitcoin, but it has a critical flaw that can catch investors off guard.
While bitcoin trades 24/7, BITI only trades during regular weekday sessions on the NYSE Arca. This means that if an investor wants to add inverse exposure to their portfolio on a Sunday afternoon, they simply cannot do so.
This is because the fund's short exposure lives in a single derivative line at roughly 3% of net assets and negative 482 contracts, which are rebalanced daily. As a result, investors who hold BITI across weekends may find that their hedge is stale by Monday morning, when bitcoin prices have already moved.
According to the fund's May 31, 2026 filing, BITI holds roughly $177 million in net assets, mostly in cash-like instruments. However, its short exposure is small in dollar terms and lives in a single derivative line at roughly 3% of net assets and negative 482 contracts.
