BitMEX Announces Permanent Shutdown Amid Industry Shifts
BitMEX, a pioneering cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, has announced its permanent shutdown on September 23, 2026. The decision was made after a strategic review by its parent company, HDR Global Trading Limited.
The closure is not due to insolvency or financial distress, but rather a broader assessment of the company's position in the market. BitMEX's legacy product, the perpetual swap, has been widely adopted across the industry, with nearly every major crypto derivatives platform using a similar structure.
BitMEX processed around $3 to $5 billion in daily volume during its peak years from 2018 to 2020, with annual volume exceeding $1 trillion. However, the exchange's market share has been steadily eroded by competitors such as Binance and Hyperliquid.
In 2026, Binance held 62.7% of the TradFi perpetual swap market, while Hyperliquid accounted for 29.7%. The decision to close BitMEX was made after a leadership shakeup in June 2026, which replaced CEO Stephan Lutz.
