BitMEX Shuts Down Amid Rise of Decentralized Perpetual Exchanges
BitMEX, a crypto exchange that has been a major player in the industry since its founding by Arthur Hayes in 2014, is shutting down on September 23. The exchange's closure comes after a strategic review by its owner, HDR Global Trading Limited.
The news sent shockwaves through the market, with BitMEX's native token, BMEX, plummeting over 90% on Thursday. This move occurs at a time when decentralized perpetual exchanges led by Hyperliquid (HYPE) are gaining ground and chipping away at centralized rivals' market share.
BitMEX introduced perpetual swaps and 100x leverage trading in 2014, which became the most-traded product in crypto and was later adopted by the industry. However, the exchange has not been without controversy, having pleaded guilty to violations of the Bank Secrecy Act for failing to maintain an anti-money laundering program in 2022.
Users who do not withdraw their assets in time will be charged an account management fee. The closure also marks a broader market-structure shift, as perpetuals on centralized exchanges dropped 10% to $12.7 trillion in volume in the second quarter of 2026, while decentralized exchanges continued to gain ground.
