Bitmine Nears 5% Ethereum Target, Teases Next Big Move
Tom Lee-backed Bitmine, a company that acquires and holds Ethereum, is nearing its goal of owning 5% of the cryptocurrency's total supply. As of the day before, Bitmine held 4.9% of the 122.1 million ETH in circulation, with 5,983,940 ETH. The company has been buying Ethereum for just over a year and a half and has already reached 98% of its goal. Lee, the Chairman of Bitmine Immersion Technologies, said that reaching the 5% target was a significant milestone, but noted that the company's objectives remain the same - to have a positive influence on the Ethereum ecosystem and to maximize shareholder value.
Lee explained that the 5% goal was set because it was a quantity of ETH large enough to have a positive influence on the ecosystem, funded in part by staking yields. He hinted that the company's next goal may be higher, but declined to disclose specifics. The company has been in consultation with the Ethereum foundation, stakeholders, and regulators to determine its next move.
Bitmine's recent ETH purchase has added to its already significant holdings, which now total just over $17 billion in combined crypto, cash, and marketable securities. Lee also defended the company's returns on its Ethereum holdings, stating that Bitmine has beaten Ethereum by about 45 percentage points from June 30 to year-end last year, and by roughly 13 points this year.
