Bitwise CIO Says Bitcoin's Volatility Drop Signals Digital Gold Status
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan argues that Bitcoin is evolving into a more stable asset, akin to digital gold. In an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal titled "Bitcoin Is Right on Schedule," Hougan points to declining volatility as evidence of this maturation. Over the past decade, Bitcoin's annualized volatility stood at 66%, but it has dropped to 44% over the last year.
Hougan acknowledges that Bitcoin remains a volatile asset but emphasizes the direction of change. He notes that over the past year, Bitcoin traded between $58,000 and $126,000, with a price of around $85,000 when the article was published. He compares this to the Nasdaq-100's current volatility in the mid-20% range, suggesting Bitcoin could soon match or even surpass this stability.
The decrease in volatility does not signal diminishing interest, Hougan argues. Instead, it reflects broader market participation. As more investors enter the space, individual trades have less impact on price swings, leading to smoother price movements. This trend aligns with growing institutional adoption, shifting Bitcoin from a speculative asset to a more mature investment.
For investors, the trend in volatility is crucial. Many institutional portfolios adjust allocations based on risk, with lower volatility allowing for larger positions. If Bitcoin's volatility continues to decline, it could justify a more significant allocation in risk-balanced portfolios. Hougan's forecast hinges on the gap between Bitcoin's volatility and the Nasdaq-100's mid-20% range narrowing further.
