Bitwise CIO Sees Resilient Bitcoin as Sign of Crypto Winter's Bottom
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan thinks Bitcoin may be near the bottom of its price cycle, also known as crypto winter. According to him, Bitcoin's resilience in the face of negative news could signal that the bear market has run its course.
Hougan pointed out several instances where Bitcoin absorbed bad news without a significant price drop. For example, when Strategy Executive Chairman Michael Saylor started selling his Bitcoin reserves through the company and the firm's STRC preferred stock slid toward $75, the price of Bitcoin hardly moved. Similarly, the odds of the Clarity Act passing, which would set federal rules for digital asset markets, fell from the mid-40s into the teens, but again, Bitcoin's price barely reacted.
Hougan attributes this lack of reaction to a shift in how investors are approaching the market. He believes that large wealth management platforms will be the next driver pulling fresh capital into Bitcoin, and not short-term hype. These platforms have already begun to approve Bitwise's own Solana staking ETF, BSOL, even during a market down roughly 50% from its highs.
Hougan also weighed in on how investors should split their assets between exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and cold storage. He recommends that most of an investor's holdings should be in ETFs, such as the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB), with a smaller portion kept in cold storage as an opt-out option.
