BlackRock Dominates Bitcoin ETF Market with Financialization Toolkit
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) has become one of the most successful ETF launches in history, managing tens of billions in assets under management since its debut in January 2024. The company initially assumed that institutions wanted a safe place to store their Bitcoin, but instead, they were looking for a way to use it like any other financial asset.
According to Jay Jacobs, a BlackRock executive, the primary force driving Bitcoin into ETF wrappers is not security, but rather financialization - the process of turning an asset into something that can be collateralized, optioned, lent against, and plugged into traditional finance.
The company lowered the in-kind creation and redemption threshold to approximately $1.5 million, making it easier for institutional players to convert their direct holdings into spot Bitcoin ETF shares through in-kind creations and redemptions.
BlackRock also launched the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA) in June 2026, which generates annualized yields of 15-25% by selling options premiums against Bitcoin positions. This strategy allows investors to capture some of Bitcoin's upside while harvesting income from options premiums.
