BlackRock Sees Shift in Investor Sentiment as BTC Diverges from Equities

BlackRock's head of digital assets, Robert Mitchnick, has observed a shift in investor sentiment towards Bitcoin (BTC) over the past month. This improvement in attitude is notable as it marks a divergence from traditional equity markets.

In an interview, Mitchnick pointed out that for an extended period, BTC remained stagnant or declined while AI-related shares advanced strongly. However, this pattern reversed in July, with Bitcoin showing relative strength and outperforming the broader equity complex during a substantial pullback in AI-related shares.

This separation is seen as constructive by Mitchnick, aligning with the investment rationale that positions Bitcoin as a portfolio diversifier and potential safeguard against severe downside risks. The remarks come amid a difficult price environment, with BTC having declined nearly 30% year-to-date and trading around 50% below its levels from a year earlier.

Despite this challenging landscape, demand through regulated investment vehicles remains resilient, with US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) posting their strongest weekly inflows since mid-April. The BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust captured the bulk of this activity, attracting approximately $693.7 million, more than 80% of the total.
