BlackRock's IBIT Fund Dominates US Bitcoin ETF Market with $63 Billion in Inflows

The US Bitcoin ETF market has been dominated by BlackRock's IBIT fund, which has absorbed nearly all of the net inflows since its launch in January 2024. According to Farside Investors' data, IBIT has collected over $63.9 billion in cumulative net inflows, while the entire group of US spot Bitcoin ETFs has retained only $55.5 billion. This means that IBIT has supplied every dollar the category retained, plus enough to offset the net exits from all its rivals.

The flow data shows that on August 27, IBIT received $277.6 million in inflows, while the rest of the market combined lost $35.3 million. Over the entire history of the market, IBIT has accounted for 115.2% of the category's net inflow. This is due to the fund's ability to absorb large amounts of capital and provide a familiar investment vehicle for investors.

The dominance of IBIT in the US Bitcoin ETF market is likely due to its broad access to conventional portfolios, heavy daily trading, and deep liquidity. The fund has also been able to attract institutional investors through BlackRock's relationships with financial advisers and companies. However, the structure of the fund also limits its ability to act as a true buyer of last resort, as it relies on shareholder demand for new shares.

The result is a unique split in Bitcoin ownership, where the network asset remains decentralized at the protocol layer, but a large portion of fresh US investment passes through BlackRock's IBIT fund. This has raised questions about the concentration of access to capital markets and the potential risks associated with this structure.
