Blast Ethereum L2 Shuts Down Amid Revenue Crisis
Blast, an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) blockchain, is shutting down due to financial insustainability. Despite attracting over $20 million in funding from investors like Paradigm and Standard Crypto in November 2023, Blast has been unable to generate enough revenue to support its operations.
The network's current numbers reveal that it processes hundreds of thousands of transactions daily but generates only $23 in chain fees and $9.39 in chain revenue. This is a far cry from the $2 billion in TVL (Total Value Locked) Blast had accumulated by February 2024, just months after its mainnet launch.
Blast's team announced the shutdown on October 2, citing that the ongoing costs of maintaining the network exceed the revenue generated. The closure comes as a surprise to many in the crypto community, given Blast's early success and innovative approach to yield-bearing strategies.
