Blast Layer 2 Ethereum Network Shuts Down Due to Financial Difficulties

Blast, a layer 2 Ethereum network that once held $2.3 billion, is shutting down due to financial difficulties. The network's team announced the decision on October 2, citing that it can no longer pay its own bills. Blast's revenue over the prior 24 hours came to $110, which is significantly lower than its peak of $2.3 billion. Users have until October 26 to withdraw their funds through Blast's normal interface. After that, anyone still holding assets on the chain will need to interact directly with Blast's bridge contracts on Ethereum mainnet.

The network's rise was rapid, with its TVL (total value locked) hitting $230 million within 48 hours of its unveiling. By the time Blast launched, its TVL was near $2.27 billion, making it one of the largest L2s in the Ethereum ecosystem. However, the money that showed up for the airdrop left after it, and the network's TVL declined by nearly 99% from its February 2024 peak.

The shutdown is not an isolated incident, as research shows that the top three networks by TVL - Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism - now control roughly 80% of all sequencer fee revenue across tracked chains. The mechanism behind the shutdown is the same every time: a rollup launches, dangles a points programme or a native yield feature, and watches TVL spike as farmers chase an airdrop rather than any real use for the chain.
