Blockchain-Based Equity Futures Erupt in US Market
The emergence of equity perpetual futures on blockchain platforms has quietly revolutionized the way traders interact with traditional stock markets. Hyperliquid, a dominant decentralized derivatives venue, has listed perpetual futures on stocks, including SpaceX's recent IPO. This development has allowed traders to access and short US-listed equities from anywhere in the world, without the need for a US brokerage account or the associated costs.
The SPCX perp, which tracked the SpaceX IPO tick-for-tick, reached a high of $228.74 alongside the stock's peak price of $225.64 and collapsed by 48% after the listing. Traders were able to take on massive short positions, including a $14 million short at 10x leverage paired with a $60 million Bitcoin short at 40x leverage.
Equity perpetual futures offer several advantages over traditional equity markets, including 24/7 trading, high leverage, and access for traders without US residency. However, the product's limitations include no ownership of underlying shares, no dividend claims, and reliance on oracle price feeds and venue solvency.
