Bond Market Turmoil Boosts Gold and Bitcoin Prices
The bond market turmoil is sending shockwaves through global financial markets, boosting the prices of gold and Bitcoin. The prices of Bitcoin have surged by 22% in recent days, nearing a high of $80,000 after hovering below $65,000 for months.
The rally has also driven up the price of gold, with investors seeking alternative stores of value outside the U.S. dollar and government debt. This comes as long-term bond yields have hit their highest levels since 2007, representing the costs investors demand to be paid in exchange for buying bonds.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced last week that the Treasury Department would soon double the maximum size of its bond buyback from $2 billion to $4 billion using its general account. While this move aims to limit the rise of long-term government bond yields and minimize borrowing costs, experts question its effectiveness.
Russell Rhoads, a clinical associate professor of financial management at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, said that 'They're trying to influence the long end, but they're doing it with a drop in the bucket.' He noted that a few billion dollars is not enough to significantly impact a market of trillions.
