Brazil Sets Pace with Rapidly Evolving Digital Asset Regulations
Brazil's digital asset market has undergone significant changes in recent years, moving from a broad legislative framework to detailed, operational, and comprehensive regulation. According to Marcos Coelho da Rocha, Partner at Veirano Advogados, this shift occurred in just three years, with the most demanding requirements arriving in the last 12 months.
The Central Bank of Brazil has been leading this innovation, providing a high level of detail in its regulations for the Brazilian market. This granular framework removes guesswork for companies, allowing them to know what capital thresholds apply and what controls need to be demonstrated before filing an application.
Brazil's regulatory approach is considered fast-moving, with the country moving from its first legal definition of digital assets in 2014 to a fully detailed VASP framework in roughly a decade. Nagel Paulino, Head of the Regulatory Division at the Central Bank of Brazil, attributes this speed to the market itself recognizing the need for regulation.
