Burry Unveils 'Missing $3 Trillion' in Big Tech Financial Holes

Financial expert Michael Burry is scrutinizing Big Tech companies' financial disclosures, focusing on Oracle's AI infrastructure buildout. In his Substack post 'The Heretic's Guide to AI's Stars Part IV: The Big 5 Hyperscalers & the Missing $3 Trillion,' he argues that these companies' accounting practices obscure their true costs.

Burry targets Oracle, which reported a 121% year-over-year jump in cloud infrastructure revenue for Q1 2027. However, its share price declined after the report. He claims that Oracle has disclosed $261 billion in off-balance-sheet data center lease commitments, many of which haven't even started yet.

These leases represent future obligations for facilities not currently operational or generating revenue. Credit agencies like S&P have also taken notice, downgrading Oracle to BBB- in July 2026 due to high leverage from substantial AI investments. Burry has maintained short positions against Oracle's stock, betting that the market is overvaluing the company relative to its actual financial health.
