Burry Warns AI Frenzy May Spark Market 'Bloody Mess'

Share

Michael Burry, the investor known for predicting the 2008 financial crisis, is sounding the alarm about a potential market crash. He believes that American stocks may be approaching a major top and warns of a possible disorderly sell-off similar to the 1987 Black Monday crash.

Burry's concern is not just about high valuations but also about the concentration of investor enthusiasm around artificial intelligence (AI). While AI has generated genuine revenue growth, stock prices reflect expectations about the future, not just current demand. Burry questions whether the financial returns from AI infrastructure will justify the amount being spent.

He points out that volatility-sensitive strategies oversee approximately $500 billion and estimates that even a modest decline of around 2.5% in the S&P 500 could cause some of these funds to reduce their equity exposure significantly. This, he warns, could create a feedback loop that would lead to a 'bloody mess'.

Burry's comparison with the 1987 crash focuses on the potential for automated trading and hedging strategies to amplify market movements. He notes that while modern markets have circuit breakers and risk-management systems in place, these safeguards may not be enough to prevent a sudden and significant decline in stocks and cryptocurrencies.
