Buterin: AI Not a Threat to Bitcoin's Security
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum (ETH), has expressed his skepticism about the threat posed by AI to cryptocurrencies. Liron Shapira, CEO of Relationship Hero, had predicted a 50% chance that Bitcoin (BTC) would crash by more than 50% within two years due to AI undermining its security features.
Buterin dismissed this notion in a post on X, stating that AI would strengthen cybersecurity platforms just as much as it enabled new attacks. He also argued that Bitcoin was already capable of countering most security challenges and that the risk of actual cracks appearing in its consensus mechanism was 'tiny'.
In fact, Buterin is so confident in his view that he offered to take a bet against Shapira's gloomy prediction, saying that he'd already taken the opposite side with 90% of his net worth through his Ether holdings.
The Ethereum co-founder cited several reasons why AI is not a significant threat to Bitcoin. Firstly, it would take millions of years for even the most advanced AI applications to crack Bitcoin's cryptographic locks. Additionally, Bitcoin's developers are already countering the threat of quantum computers with hidden public keys and quantum-proof locks.
While AI may pose some risks, Buterin emphasized that these would be indirect and similar to those faced by traditional banking systems. He encouraged investors to focus on macroeconomic headwinds such as geopolitical conflicts and interest rate hikes, rather than speculation about AI and quantum computing.
