Buterin Warns AI Threatens Persistent Blockchain Pseudonyms

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has sounded the alarm about the potential threat of artificial intelligence to persistent blockchain pseudonyms. In a recent warning, he stated that AI could connect activity patterns across blockchain accounts, making it increasingly difficult for users to maintain their anonymity.

Buterin emphasized the difference between 'persistent pseudonymity' and 'message-by-message unlinkability'. While the former refers to hiding a user's legal identity, the latter aims to prevent observers from linking different actions to the same person. He pointed out that mixnet projects and privacy-focused messaging services are working towards achieving this goal.

The Ethereum team has also acknowledged the importance of maintaining user anonymity on the network. Their updated roadmap sets out three priorities: private reads, private writes, and private proving. These features aim to reduce unnecessary disclosure and enable selective proof of information, while preserving confidentiality.
