California has passed a bill that prohibits public officials from issuing memecoins. The legislation was sent to the governor for signature and will take effect on January 1, 2027.

The restrictions apply to state and local government officials, as well as members of state boards, commissions, and committees. Digital service providers will also be prohibited from listing memecoins issued by public officials or their partners for sale or purchase by California residents.

The bill defines a memecoin broadly as a digital asset tied to internet memes, public figures, celebrities, current events, cultural phenomena, humor, or social trends, and to the engagement of an online community in buying and trading it. The restrictions aim to prevent officials from using their powers for personal financial gain.
