Canaan Struggles Amid Crypto Downturn
Canaan Inc., a company that makes cryptocurrency mining machines, is struggling to stay afloat due to the recent downturn in crypto markets. The company's revenue from product sales plummeted by more than 80% year-over-year to $13.6 million in the second quarter.
This decline was largely driven by high costs and unfavorable market conditions, which made it difficult for miners to generate revenue. As a result, Canaan's inventory of unsold Avalon mining machines swelled, forcing the company to take significant write-downs on its balance sheet.
Canaan attempted to mitigate this issue by using some of its unsold machines in its own mining operation, but this approach has limitations. The company's crypto holdings, which increased by 29% year-over-year to 1,915.5 bitcoins, were worth less than they would have been a year ago due to the decline in cryptocurrency prices.
The company's net loss ballooned to nearly $100 million in the second quarter, compared to a loss of $11 million in the same period last year. Canaan's CEO, Zhang Nangeng, noted that the industry inventory still needs to be digested and miner procurement remains cautious due to the recent price recovery of bitcoin.
