Cardano Reviews CIP-0197 Proposal for Quantum-Resistant Wallet Protection

Cardano has opened formal review of its proposal CIP-0197, which aims to add optional protection against future quantum computing threats.

The plan, authored by researcher Robert Phair, targets hierarchical deterministic wallets used across the Cardano network. It would allow users to strengthen their existing wallet addresses without forcing an immediate migration to new keys.

CIP-0197 is not live on the Cardano mainnet and is not mandatory for users or developers. However, preparing an optional protection method now gives the community time to test and adjust the approach before it becomes urgent.

The proposal uses a zero-knowledge proof layer to add wallet protection, which could reduce complications later when cryptographic upgrades are needed. Users can forget passwords or lose keys, and wallet software varies widely across providers, making an optional layer a smoother path toward future security upgrades.
