Cardano's AI Agent Economy Play: A Promising but Elusive Opportunity
Cardano has become part of the AI agent economy, thanks to its inclusion in the x402 software development kit. This protocol, created by Coinbase, enables AI agents to pay for web services without needing a credit card or account. As of September 23, the Agent Economy tracker reported 85 million x402 payments on the Base chain and 66.9 million on Solana.
However, Cardano's own agent network, Masumi, has only recorded 38,777 transactions, a modest increase from 29,000 in May. The Cardano Foundation's x402 payment processor service has not yet been run on Cardano's main network, which is a crucial link to the wider x402 ecosystem.
The bigger concern is that even if Cardano's agent payments ecosystem grows, holders may not benefit. Suppose Cardano won every x402 payment, which would be worth $41.8 million in stablecoins. This is a tiny fraction of Cardano's $9.2 billion market value as of September 30.
Payment volume isn't the same as holder income, and Cardano's fee base has been shrinking. In August, the coin collected $39,380 in network transaction fees, down from $312,207 a year prior. This suggests that even a breakthrough in agent payments may not lift Cardano's fortunes.
