Cardano's Voltaire Era Brings Decentralized Governance to Mainnet
Cardano's Voltaire Era marks a significant milestone in its development. The network has moved away from relying on its founding organizations for direction, and now ADA holders, delegates, and stake pool operators decide what happens next.
This shift is crucial because blockchains that remain dependent on one team tend to struggle with trust issues. Voltaire exists to remove this dependency by introducing a decentralized governance model.
The Cardano roadmap has five phases: Byron, Shelley, Goguen, Basho, and Voltaire. Each phase added technical layers until Voltaire introduced the missing piece, a voting and treasury system. According to the roadmap, once both are in place, Cardano becomes self-sustaining and no longer managed by its founding entity.
