Cassidy's Lifeline for Trump's Nominee Gives Confirmation Vote New Life

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana announced on Friday that he will support President Donald Trump's nominee for Attorney General, Todd Blanche. Cassidy acknowledged that Blanche 'is not perfect' but argued that no one is, and suggested that another nominee may not fare any better.

Cassidy lost his re-election primary in May to a Trump-backed candidate, but emphasized that his personal relationship with the President was irrelevant to his decision.

Blanche needed Cassidy's support for confirmation after two prominent Republican Senators publicly declared they would not back him. GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska announced her intention to vote against Blanche due to concerns about politicization and weaponization of the Justice Department under Trump.

Murkowski stated that she was aware the 'anti-weaponization' fund, which has been a point of contention, is only off the table because this nomination is pending and the Senate has leverage. Cassidy expressed some concerns regarding Blanche's past actions but ultimately decided to support his confirmation, citing his qualifications for the role.

The confirmation vote now appears more likely to succeed with Cassidy on board, despite opposition from other Republicans like Murkowski and Collins of Maine.
