China Labels Crypto an 'Accomplice' to Espionage Amid Growing Concerns Over Anonymity

Share

China's Ministry of State Security has labeled cryptocurrency an 'accomplice' to espionage due to its potential role in facilitating financial transactions between foreign agents and intelligence services. According to the MSS, virtual currencies are often used as a payment method for spies, providing a way to transfer funds across borders without detection.

The MSS claims that cryptocurrency transactions are not entirely anonymous, as public blockchain records can be used to trace payments back to specific individuals. This is because blockchain analytics tools can match activity in blockchain records to specific services or other entities using techniques like address tagging and clustering.

China's crypto warning also highlights the risks of money laundering and cybercrime associated with cryptocurrency use. The MSS report notes that significant amounts of transactions related to Chinese-language money laundering groups were detected in 2025, totaling $16.1 billion.
