China Warns Crypto Anonymity Is an Illusion

Share

China's Ministry of State Security has issued a warning about the perceived anonymity of cryptocurrency transactions. According to the Global Times, the ministry stated that digital assets do not provide a legal escape for criminals.

The warning emphasized that blockchain records and associated digital information can be used to investigate transactions and identify participants. This is in line with China's broader approach to cryptocurrency, which has maintained strict restrictions on financial activities related to virtual assets.

While cryptocurrency addresses may not display a user's name directly, transactions recorded on public blockchains create a permanent record of funds moving between addresses. The ministry pointed out that this information can be examined as part of investigations and distinguished between pseudonymity and complete anonymity.
