Circle Upgrades Gateway With ERC-1271 Support

Circle has upgraded its Gateway product to support ERC-1271 signatures. This upgrade enables smart contracts and smart contract wallets to interact with the platform using their existing authorization logic.

The update eliminates the need for delegate-based approval flows, reducing setup complexity for DeFi protocols, treasury systems, payment infrastructure, and smart wallets.

The addition of ERC-1271 support allows applications that rely on Gateway to continue depending on Circle's infrastructure for cross-chain balance management. However, the feature does not modify the centralized processes that govern the minting and burning of USDC.

The update expands potential cross-chain USDC workflows, allowing DeFi protocols, contracts, payment infrastructure, treasury systems, and smart wallet infrastructure to manage USDC from a unified balance across supported chains.

The upgrade follows Circle's receipt of a limited-purpose trust charter from the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). This approval permits Circle Internet Trust Company LLC, operating as Circle New York Trust, to function under New York's trust company framework.

Circle said existing Gateway users that rely on delegate-based authorization can migrate toward direct smart contract integration through ERC-1271.

Auditors and compliance teams monitoring interactions between smart contracts and the Gateway system may also need to account for the additional authorization models now supported.
