Circle's Stablecoin Empire Faces Headwinds Amid Banking Risks
Circle is the company behind the USDC stablecoin, which currently holds the second-largest market cap among stablecoins according to CoinGecko. Circle's main product, Circle Mint, caters to businesses such as fintechs, exchanges, payment processors, and treasury teams that use Circle to mint and redeem USDC and EURC at scale.
Circle provides infrastructure for stablecoins through services like CCTP, Circle Wallets, and the Circle Payment Network. The company is also developing its layer 1 blockchain, Arc, which is designed specifically for stablecoins. In 2025, Circle achieved a major milestone by becoming a public company following its listing on the NYSE in June.
Regulatory compliance and transparency are key aspects of Circle's pitch. However, the company made headlines in 2023 after USDC temporarily lost its $1 peg due to Circle's ties with the failed Silicon Valley Bank. This incident highlighted that even regulated companies like Circle can face risks from the traditional banking system.
