Citi Links Up with Coinbase for Stablecoin Payments

Share

Citi has partnered with Coinbase to enable its institutional clients to accept stablecoin payments. This move marks another significant step in the growing involvement of large financial institutions in digital money.

The partnership will allow merchants using Spring by Citi, the bank's payment acceptance business, to take stablecoins at checkout through an integration with Coinbase Payments. The digital tokens will be automatically converted into fiat currency, and Citi will settle the funds as the bank of record.

This means that merchants won't have to hold or manage cryptocurrencies themselves, which could simplify their operations and reduce risk. However, it's unclear how this development might impact the broader use of stablecoins in e-commerce and other industries.
