Citi Teams Up with Coinbase for Stablecoin Payments
Citi has formed a partnership with Coinbase to enable institutional clients to make use of stablecoin payments. This move will allow Citi's corporate customers to accept stablecoins via its merchant-processing services, convert fiat currencies into crypto or stablecoins, and facilitate on-chain payments. Once funds are received in the form of stablecoins, they can be converted back to fiat currency.
Citi operates across 94 markets and has connections with more than 300 clearing systems. In comparison, Coinbase boasts around $246 billion in assets on its platform. The bank predicts that stablecoin issuance could reach a significant milestone of $1.9 trillion by the year 2030 in its base case scenario.
This partnership between Citi and Coinbase marks an important step forward for the adoption of stablecoins in mainstream finance. As more institutional clients become aware of this option, it may lead to increased use cases for stablecoins in various industries.
