Citi Teams Up with Coinbase for Stablecoin Payments Push

Share

Citigroup has announced a partnership with Coinbase to enable stablecoin payments for its institutional clients. This collaboration will allow Citi's corporate customers to accept stablecoins through its merchant-processing services, convert fiat currencies into cryptocurrencies or stablecoins, make on-chain payments, and convert funds back to fiat. The move marks an expansion of the bank's efforts to incorporate digital assets into its offerings.

Citi operates in 94 markets and more than 300 clearing systems, providing a vast reach for its clients. Coinbase, meanwhile, boasts around $246 billion in assets on its platform. This partnership aims to bridge the gap between traditional banking services and cryptocurrency transactions.

According to Citi's projections, stablecoin issuance could reach a staggering $1.9 trillion by 2030 in its base case scenario. While this figure is ambitious, it reflects the growing interest in stablecoins as a means of facilitating efficient cross-border payments.
