Clarity Act Fails Senate Cloture Vote, Crypto Markets Reel

The Clarity Act, a bill aimed at regulating cryptocurrency in America, has failed to clear its Senate cloture vote by a margin of roughly 46-43. This narrow defeat comes despite US President Donald Trump's concession on stricter ethics provisions the day before the vote.

Seven Democrats who helped negotiate the bill's terms voted against advancing it, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, Mark Warner, Cory Booker, Raphael Warnock, Ruben Gallego, Angela Alsobrooks, and Catherine Cortez Masto. Republican senators Josh Hawley, Susan Collins, and Jerry Moran also opposed cloture, with Senator Thom Tillis switching his position from yes to no at the last minute.

Senator Elizabeth Warren said the bill would 'decimate the guardrails put in place after the Great Depression,' while Senator Elissa Slotkin stated that the ethics provisions in the bill are 'simply too thin' due to crypto dealings by Trump, his family, and members of his Cabinet.

The market reaction was immediate, with Bitcoin falling 2.9% over 24 hours and 3.7% over the past week. Coinbase closed down 10.1%, Robinhood fell 3.4%, and Bitmine Immersion Technologies dropped 6%. The total crypto market capitalization also declined by 3% to $2.67 trillion.
