CLARITY Act Stalls in Senate Amid Presidential Crypto Ethics, Stablecoin Row
The CLARITY Act, a bill aimed at regulating the US crypto markets, failed to advance in the Senate on September 15. Despite strong Republican support and over 100 concessions made by Republicans to Democrats, the bill was unable to secure a single Democratic vote.
The main reasons for the bill's failure were disagreements over presidential crypto ethics and stablecoin rewards. Democrats argued that new restrictions should be imposed on President Trump's ability to profit from the industry before regulating stablecoins and other crypto assets.
Another reason for the bill's failure was the banking sector's concerns over stablecoin incentives causing 'substantial harm' to community banks. The American Bankers Association and other community bank groups argued that regulators should not wait until there was substantial harm before taking action on stablecoin rewards.
