CLARITY Act Stalls in Senate as Bipartisan Disagreements Persist

Share

The CLARITY Act, a bill aimed at regulating digital assets, has stalled in the Senate due to bipartisan disagreements. Despite last-minute negotiations and concessions from both sides, the bill failed to clear the 60-vote hurdle on Tuesday.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis switched his vote from yes to no, but it was a procedural maneuver that allows him to file a motion to reconsider. This gives the bill a glimmer of hope, with Director of US Federal Affairs for the Crypto Council for Innovation, Ryan Eagan, stating that the motion would provide an opportunity to revisit the bill at any point this session.

However, time is running out as the Senate is scheduled to recess on October 2 and return after the midterm elections. Congressman Shri Thanedar says the timeline presents a 'major barrier' to reaching an agreement, making it 'very low' that a compromise can be reached before the end of the year.

The divide between Democrats and Republicans has shifted from whether Congress should regulate crypto to how far the bill should go in securing bipartisan support. Senator Angela Alsobrooks says she's willing to negotiate over ethics provisions, but wants more restrictions on President Trump's ability to use his office for personal gain.
