Codeberg Bans LLM-Generated Code and Cryptocurrency Projects

Codeberg, a community-led open source project hosting site, has announced a ban on projects whose code is largely or fully machine-generated through LLMs and other 'AI' tools.

This decision follows a community vote that saw two motions pass: one to forbid the scraping of project code for use in LLMs, which easily passed with 358 votes in favor versus 144 against.

The second motion, which disallowed projects whose code was substantially generated by LLMs like Claude and OpenAI Codex, also passed. This decision was made due to concerns about 'license whitewashing', the direct and indirect hardware costs associated with expanding AI datacenter hyperscaling, and the impact of these tools on the OSS community.

The community cited recent studies that suggest LLM-based tools are destroying the cognitive abilities of their users and contributing to the decline of the OSS community. This decision is reflected in Codeberg's updated Terms of Use, which now prohibit both cryptocurrency-related projects and those generated by LLMs.
