Coinbase Bets Big on Agentic Finance with Base Payments Crossing 100M

Coinbase is building an agentic finance payment stack using Base, USDC, x402, and agent wallets. According to CEO Brian Armstrong, AI agents will increase demand for crypto by utilizing programmable money for autonomous transactions.

Armstrong has stated that AI growth is linked to programmable money because traditional bank accounts and manual approval processes are dependent on human identity checks. He believes AI agents need programmable money to complete tasks efficiently, and this trend will continue to grow, with AI agents eventually completing more daily transactions than all humans combined.

Coinbase has been expanding its agent tools, including Agentic.market, which allows software agents to find and purchase services using USDC. The company's products show that machines can initiate blockchain payments, but adoption figures depend on how analysts classify agent activity.
