Coinbase Bolsters Stablecoin Infrastructure with Clearinghouse Registration
Coinbase Clearing LLC has been registered by the CFTC as a derivatives clearing organization (DCO), marking a significant step in expanding stablecoin infrastructure. The new unit is a USDC-native clearinghouse, using Circle's dollar stablecoin as collateral and settling trades around the clock.
The company already held registrations for a broker (FCM) and exchange (DCM), but this clears the last hurdle to establish a full regulated derivatives stack. Coinbase Clearing will now design, list, broker, and clear fully collateralized contracts under one roof.
A separate announcement saw Citi expand its partnership with Coinbase, using their Virtual Account Wallet to power Coinbase Virtual Accounts. This allows business customers to convert incoming fiat into stablecoins automatically, marking an industry first.
