Coinbase Brings Regulated Crypto Derivatives to Canadian Traders
Coinbase has expanded its trading services in Canada by launching regulated crypto derivatives. The move allows Canadian users to trade both perpetual and dated futures tied to major digital assets, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH). This marks a significant development in the Canadian market, as US-based trading firms continue to widen their offerings.
The contracts are made available through Coinbase Financial Markets, a futures commission merchant registered with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The launch includes 23 crypto perpetual and dated futures, five commodity futures, and the Coinbase 50 Index. Eligible customers can access these products, but only if they meet certain financial criteria, including having at least $5 million in net financial assets or being served through registered investment advisers and dealers.
This move follows a broader trend of US trading platforms expanding into Canada. Other firms like Webull have also entered the market, offering crypto trading services to Canadian customers. However, regulatory developments in Canada are tightening the environment around some crypto activity, with proposed restrictions on crypto ATMs and political donations.
