Coinbase Brings Regulated Crypto Futures to Canada
Coinbase has launched regulated crypto futures for eligible Canadian traders through its Coinbase Financial Markets platform. The move makes it the first major crypto-native platform to offer direct native crypto futures in Canada, with a lineup of 23 perpetual and dated contracts tied to Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, and other assets.
The initial offering includes perpetual-style and dated contracts, as well as five commodity futures linked to gold, silver, oil, and an index future called COIN50. Coinbase describes the contracts as 'nano-sized,' which allows for up to 10 times leverage without requiring a large capital investment.
Eligible traders can take long or short positions with leverage of up to 10 times, but the company warns that futures trading may not suit every investor and can magnify losses. The contracts are offered at an introductory price of 0.02% per trade plus $0.11 per contract, a temporary rate that Coinbase has not specified will last indefinitely.
CFM provides the regulated route for these contracts, registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and a member of the National Futures Association. This move builds on Coinbase's wider derivatives infrastructure and expands regulated product choice in Canada without removing market risks attached to derivatives.
