Coinbase CEO Armstrong Sees Crypto as Key to Unlocking AI Payments

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong believes that crypto can provide programmable payment infrastructure for autonomous AI agents. He argues that blockchain-based payments could become a key component of Agentic Finance (AiFi), allowing software agents to transact continuously and across online services.

Armstrong compared cryptocurrency with general-purpose technologies such as the internet and electricity, stating that AI development could strengthen, rather than diminish, the case for programmable blockchain-based payments. He rejected the view that cryptocurrency companies must choose between crypto and artificial intelligence, instead seeing them as complementary technologies.

Coinbase has been building this infrastructure through its x402 protocol, Base blockchain, and USDC stablecoin. The company launched Coinbase for Agents on June 11, which connects supported AI agents to Coinbase accounts through a command-line interface and Model Context Protocol integration.
