Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong: Cryptocurrencies Unlock Global Financial Access
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong recently emphasized that cryptocurrencies should receive more credit for their ability to provide financial access worldwide. According to him, stablecoins have enabled anyone, anywhere to access a low-inflation currency and send it 24/7 at a fraction of the cost. He also highlighted decentralized finance (DeFi) applications as a means to give everyone access to credit, especially unbanked individuals.
Furthermore, Armstrong mentioned that tokenized stocks can expand the total addressable market for U.S. equities by making it easier for overseas investors without U.S. brokerage accounts to invest in U.S. companies. This expansion could be a game changer for companies like Robinhood. In early July, Robinhood launched its own blockchain (Robinhood Chain) to support tokenized stocks.
Armstrong's opinions on the matter are not surprising given Coinbase's position as one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges. While the crypto market may remain chilly this year due to macro headwinds, those catalysts could kick in and fundamentally transform the financial sector over the long term.
