Coinbase Clears Last Hurdle in Building Derivatives Infrastructure
Coinbase has taken a major step in building its derivatives infrastructure by registering Coinbase Clearing LLC as a Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO) with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This approval will allow Coinbase to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps using USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.
The CFTC registration is a significant development for Coinbase as it fills in the final piece of its derivatives stack. The company now has three separate regulated components covering derivatives: Coinbase Derivatives LLC operates as a designated contract market, Coinbase Financial Markets serves as a futures commission merchant, and Coinbase Clearing LLC will add the DCO layer.
The new clearinghouse is designed to support 24/7 settlement, fitting Coinbase's always-on trading model. However, it does not mean every derivatives product will suddenly settle around the clock. It gives Coinbase the regulated infrastructure to design products around this capability.
